Children belong at the library!
At Shelby Area District Library, we take pride in being Preschoolers’ door to learning. We offer numerous programs that children of all ages and their families can enjoy and benefit from.
1,000 Books Before Kindergarten
Your child can track books read and celebrate milestones with prizes in this early literacy program. This program is made possible through a generous donation from The Gerber Foundation. Visit the library to learn more and register your child (baby through preschool-aged).
Summer Reading Program
Each year, the library hosts a summer-long program to encourage children, youth, and families to read and maintain reading skills. The Summer Reading Program combines tracking minutes read with giveaways and interactive events such as animal presentations and craft projects.

Take Home Craft Kits
At times, the library offers take-home craft kits for young patrons that can be checked out at the circulation desk. These kits, made available thanks to the Friends of the Shelby Area District Library, contain seasonally themed crafts for children to assemble at home. Check our Facebook page for announcements when new kits are available.
Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library
Sign your child up to receive a new, carefully selected book delivered monthly to your home at no cost. All children under age 5 living in Oceana, Muskegon, and Newaygo counties are eligible to participate through United Way of the Lakeshore.
Michigan Activity Pass (MAP)
Explore participating cultural destinations, parks, campgrounds, and recreation areas throughout the state at a discounted rate with your Shelby Area District Library card.
