Notes From Friends: March 2024

March is National Reading Month, a celebration that encourages reading for all ages and promotes reading as a key feature for learning, social, and professional development. National Reading Month is celebrated in March to honor Dr. Seuss’s birthday. The increase in reading during this month, especially for children, has significant benefits that will continue to pay off in the future; it strengthens the mental muscles, helps to improve comprehension and analytical abilities, and increases imagination and boosts memory. What better way to kick off the month of March than to stop in to the Shelby Library and stock up on books to read with your children or grandchildren! Michigan March weather can be temperamental and confine us indoors when we long for spring so what better time to read a good mystery or peruse gardening books for spring planting!

Mentioning spring reminds me that the Friends of S.A.D.L. have our next quarterly meeting April 18 at 5:00 when our election of officers and board members will take place. If you are interested in taking a leadership role with Friends, please contact me at [email protected] by March 25. More information will follow in the April newsletter. Remember, you are already a Friend of S.A.D.L. when you volunteer for any of our activities, fundraisers, or contribute monetarily. We welcome your active participation and encourage you to show support for the Shelby Area District Library by volunteering with Friends of S.A.D.L. We love our Shelby Library!

The Friends of S.AD.L. are members of Friends of Michigan Libraries (FOML), an organization that links us with many other library Friends groups statewide. The annual meeting of FOML is April 11 at the Library of Michigan in Lansing. I will be there to represent us and also as a board member of FOML. If you are interested in attending, please get in touch. The meeting will be followed by “Talk About Friends,” a chance to connect with other Friends around the state and discuss challenges for volunteers, fundraising ideas, and more. Participation in the event can be in person or by Zoom with registration.

Think Spring!
