Notes From From Friends: April 2025

Have you picked out your seeds from our new “Seed Library?” Spring is definitely in the air for the Friends of SADL. Thank you, Amanda Mazur and her volunteers who obtained, organized, and put together this free seed sharing program for our community. We also hosted Garry McKeen, a Master Gardener who conducted a workshop March 26 at the Shelby Library! Thank you, Garry for giving so generously of your time and knowledge to us gardeners! Speaking of gardens, the Friends of SADL will discuss our next community event, the “Anything Goes Garden Sale and Free Plant Exchange,” scheduled for Saturday, May 31. Volunteers are needed to donate plants, pots, garden tools, yard art, or anything related to gardening. Helpers are needed to set up on the morning of the event. Learn more about volunteering for this activity at our next quarterly meeting of Friends of SADL, Thursday, April 10 at 5:00 in the meeting room. Refreshments will be served. More info about this event will be in the May newsletter, on SADL Facebook and website.

Happy National Library Week! National Library Week April 6 – 12 is celebrated all over the country with special events taking place. The Friends of SADL are sponsoring Soap Making Classes at the Shelby Library which are already booked to full capacity! This year, the Friends of SADL celebrate 35 years of service to our library!

More than ever, libraries need our support. Think of the many ways your lives are enriched by having a librarian assist you to select books, offer computer and internet advice, supply materials to help you do your taxes, research, print, apply for jobs, or create a resume. From Story Time for kids to Arts & Craft Classes, these are just a few of the many free programs and resources available for you, your family, and neighbors. The Friends of SADL is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, dedicated to helping our library with fundraisers, activities, and volunteer opportunities. We thank the SADL staff, the Library Board, and the many volunteers in the community who share our love for the Shelby Library. While the Friends of SADL raise money to help stretch the library budget, the Shelby Library depends on grants, awards, your local tax dollars, plus state and federal funding to continue offering the kind of services you expect from your library. The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) is the only independent federal agency dedicated to funding library services. The American Library Association (ALA) is fighting for IMLS to be preserved. Learn more about how you can support and advocate for IMLS at https://ala.org.

During the month of April when you visit the Shelby Library, be sure to say, “Thank you!” to our dedicated staff and library director, Tiffany Haight. We appreciate all you do!
