Notes from Friends: September 2025
The Friends of SADL have enjoyed a busy summer! This year the Friends decided to throw a party to applaud and celebrate the many volunteers who have helped out over the last 30 years. Sending out invitations, hiring a caterer, finding just the right live music to enhance our Garden Party theme, the Friends of SADL were pleased to welcome over 60 guests to the Shelby Library grounds on August 2. Local artist Maria Vandersluys displayed 6 lovely flower themed paintings on easels. Friends erected a large tent and two banners, arranged flowers brought in from their own gardens, and created two displays showcasing the many events sponsored by the Friends. Guests munched on a delicious spread prepared by caterer Joanne Clark while listening to local musicians Becky and Steve Lawwill who humorously named themselves “The Duo Decibel System” for the day! Professional photographer Matt Ferguson documented the event with photos. We recognized our library director Tiffany Haight for her 25 years of service, and the President of the Library Board, Amanda Mazur, also awarded her with an engraved crystal book. Thankfully the weather was beautiful to make this party even better!
August 22 and 23 we welcomed the community to our annual Good Buy Book Sale. This year thanks to the generosity of our donors, we had an abundance of books, DVD’s, CD’s, and puzzles to make more than $2500, all for the benefit of Shelby Library. If you missed the sale or wish you had picked up more, stop by the library by September 6 and select from tables still brimming with books. We kindly ask that you leave a monetary donation for your selection at the front desk, remembering that this is a library fundraiser! Thank you to our co-chairs Mary Ellen Heyde and Kathy Sullivan for your hard work to make this year’s event a success! Numerous volunteers helped sort books, erect the tents, distribute signs and flyers, and so much more. The Friends of SADL are supporting Library Card Sign Up Month in September for the following activities and events: DIY Library Card Holders, Bookish Bags, Wooden Bookmarks, refreshments, book-themed freebies, stickers, a drawing for a book-themed blanket, and a Library Card Sign-Up Celebration.
