Notes from Friends: March 2026

The Friends of SADL are bringing back the popular “Seed Library” this spring. Read more in our newsletter about how you can partake of this free benefit to enhance your garden with home grown plants using seeds provided by the Friends at no cost to you! Thank you to our chairperson, Amanda Mazur, and her team of volunteers who braved a snowstorm to help sort, package the seeds, and apply labels including growing instructions. A Garden Workshop by Amanda Jones March 7 at the Shelby Library at 10 am will help to inspire you with tips for success.

Looking for something unusual to surprise your mother, grandmother, or special friend this spring? The Friends are sponsoring a Silent Auction of Gift Baskets, Spring Themed Wreaths, and Decorated Birdhouses with bids taken April 13 to May 2 when the auction ends at noon. Mother’s Day is Sunday, May 10 so our auction will end in time for you take home the perfect gift for mom!

Artists! Crafters! We need volunteers to create these beautiful auction items with proceeds benefiting our Shelby Library. At the Garden Workshop March 7, we will also make available for pick up: plain baskets, wreaths, birdhouses, ribbon, and assorted items to embellish your entries (see photos of items we will be offering to help you get started!). Displays for the auction should be delivered to the library no later than April 9. Please complete a form and turn it in to the library by April 9. Forms are located at the circulation desk or email [email protected] to have one sent to you.

Our next quarterly meeting of Friends of SADL is Thursday, April 16 at 5:00. Election of officers and board members will take place at this meeting. You may nominate yourself or another Friend (with their permission) for the Friends Board, President, VP, Secretary, or Treasurer. Please send nominations by March 26 to: [email protected]. All board and officers of Friends of SADL are unpaid volunteers who care passionately about our Shelby Library! We welcome your participation as a Friend, occasional volunteer, or on our leadership team. Please consider becoming more involved. We will also review and vote on changes recommended by the bylaws committee. Contact me at the email above if you would like to contribute ideas to the committee comprised of Janet Schultz, Patti Schlaudt, and myself. Details for our next big event, the “Free Plant Giveaway and Garden Sale” May 30 will also be discussed at this meeting.

Happy Spring! It will come! I believe! This snow shall melt!!
