The Friends of SADL are planning for warmer weather as we launch a new project this Spring, a “Seed Library!” This popular service is offered by libraries all over the country including many here in West Michigan.
Beginning March 7, library card holders can stop by the Shelby Library and select up to 10 seed packets to plant this year. Each packet contains from 5 to 10 seeds. Please limit your selection to no more than two packets per variety. We have a wide selection of over 25 different varieties of vegetable, herb, and flower seeds for you to choose. Be sure to complete the Seed Check-out form at the display near the circulation desk. If you have extra seeds of your own to donate to our Seed Library, you can pick up one of our seed envelopes at the display, label the seeds with the plant name, and include planting tips.
Thinking of Spring, the Friends are also planning a Gardening Workshop on Wednesday, March 26 at 5:00 pm. Advanced Master Gardener, Garry McKeen, will discuss planning the best location for your plants, fertilizer, growing conditions for vegetables, and more ideas to get you started growing your own garden! Register for this workshop by calling the library or sign up at the circulation desk. We have room for about 20 participants.
Another fun project supported by the Friends of SADL will take place during National Library Week in April, a “Spring-themed Melt & Pour Soap Making Class” by Charity Doornbos for all ages. Participants will have a blast making soap to take home at the end of this workshop!
During February the Friends of SADL approved donating $1000 to the Dolly Parton Imagination Library. Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library is dedicated to inspiring a love of reading by gifting books free of charge to children from birth to age five, through funding shared by Dolly Parton and local community partners in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Australia and Republic of Ireland. See a librarian at the front desk to learn more about this free service or visit the Imagination Library website to sign up your children.
Happy Spring!
