Notes from Friends: June 2025

If you are reading this before June 1st, be sure and join us for the Garden Sale and Free Plant Giveaway Saturday, 8:30 to 11 am, May 31 on the grounds of the Shelby Library. Community members have donated garden tools, pots, bird houses, yard art, and lots of plants for you to choose to spruce up your garden this spring. Your generous monetary donations are welcome with proceeds supporting the maintenance of the Friends Library Garden. 5 gorgeous garden themed baskets will take final silent auction bids until 11 am Saturday when the Garden event ends. Winners will be notified by phone. Thank you, Kathy Shea, Chairperson of the Garden Sale, and all of the volunteers who helped to make this event possible. Thank you to our creative team who assembled garden themed baskets: Emilee Best, Kathy Horton, Janet Schultz, Paula Inglis, and Mary Ann Carey. To all of you who donated to this event and attended, thank you for your generosity, for sharing your garden tips, and helping our garden grow!

The Shelby Area District Library is hosting an open house June 23 from 6 to 8 pm. This is a great opportunity to learn more about how our library serves the community while talking to staff members and Friends of SADL. Lemonade and homemade cookies will be available for you to munch on when you stop by the Friends display and greet our volunteers. We welcome new members to join us! No dues! You are a Friend of SADL when you volunteer to assist at one of the library activities or fundraisers. We are a nonprofit 501 (c3) charity whose members love to help our library thrive! Your generous donations are welcome and are tax deductible.

We have a limited number of Friends of SADL t-shirts available in women’s sizes for $15.00 each. If you wish to purchase one, please see the front desk with cash or check made out to Friends of SADL.

The Seed Library has been a great success! If you haven’t checked out free seeds yet, please do so soon before we dismantle the display and store the supplies for next year. As your seeds grow, please take photos and submit them to us for publication online or in our newsletter. Include your name and identify the plants when you email me at [email protected].

We can’t wait to see the results! My peas and spinach seeds were growing nicely in a large pot until the deer discovered them!
