Notes from Friends: April 2026

Have you picked out your seeds from our “Seed Library?” Amanda Mazur and Friends of SADL obtained, organized, and put together this free seed sharing program for our community. We also hosted Amanda Jones, a local farmer, who conducted a workshop March 7 at the Shelby Library. Thank you, Amanda for giving so generously of your time and knowledge to us gardeners!

Mother’s Day is just around the corner! If you are looking for a unique gift for mom, grandma, or that special person in your life, check out the Spring Silent Auction at the library from April 9 – May 2. Spring themed wreaths, gift baskets, and decorated birdhouses will be silent auctioned, just in time for Mother’s Day May 10. It’s not too late to submit an entry for our auction! The Friends of SADL have a few supplies to help you get started. Email me at [email protected] to set up a time to select from our stash of baskets, wreaths, and birdhouses. Finished entries are due back April 9. The Friends of SADL are planning our next community event, the “Anything Goes Garden Sale and Free Plant Exchange,” scheduled for Saturday, May 30. Volunteers are needed to donate plants, pots, garden tools, yard art, or anything related to gardening. Helpers are needed to set up on the morning of the event. Learn more about volunteering for this activity at our next quarterly meeting of Friends of SADL, Thursday, April 16 at 5:00 in the meeting room. Elections for the Friends Board and Officers will also take place at the meeting with nominations allowed from the floor. Changes to our bylaws will be voted on. A copy of the proposed changes is available at the circulation desk or email me at [email protected] for a copy. Thank you Janet Schultz and Patti Schlaudt for serving on the Bylaws committee with me.

National Library Week April 19 – 25 is celebrated all over the country with special events taking place. The Friends of SADL thank our dedicated staff and volunteers who help make the Shelby Area District Library a welcoming space for our community. More than ever, libraries need our support. Think of the many ways your lives are enriched by having a librarian assist you to select books, offer computer and internet advice, supply materials to help you do your taxes, research, print, apply for jobs, or create a resume. From Story Time for kids to Arts & Craft Classes, these are just a few of the many free programs and resources available for you, your family, and neighbors. The Friends of SADL is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, dedicated to helping our library with fundraisers, activities, and volunteer opportunities. While the Friends of SADL raise money to help stretch the library budget, the Shelby Library depends on grants, awards, your local tax dollars, plus state and federal funding to continue offering the kind of services you expect from your library.

During the month of April when you visit the Shelby Library, be sure to say, “Thank you!” to our dedicated staff and library director, Tiffany Haight. We appreciate all you do!

President, Friends of Shelby Area District Library
